“Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You)” is a masterful blend of nostalgia and raw emotion. The song captures the essence of unfulfilled longing through the lens of a tumultuous campus romance. The protagonist, caught in a relentless cycle of desire, navigates the cold, wintry streets of a university town. The lyrics vividly describe their journey through bars and bedsits, trying to grasp an elusive love interest. This narrative resonates with anyone who has experienced the pain of unreciprocated affection. The track’s composition is deeply rooted in the spirit of 80s country ballads, yet it carries a modern twist. Seafarers’ songwriter, Matthew Herd, channels the influence of legends like Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Sinead O’Connor. The result is a song that feels both timeless and contemporary. The heartfelt lyrics and evocative melodies echo the poignant storytelling and emotional depth characteristic of these country greats. Seafarers, formed in 2018, consist of a talented group of musicians including vocalist Lauren Kinsella, guitarist and vocalist Arun Thavasothy, pianist Tom Taylor, bassist Tom McCredie, and drummer Dave Hamblett. Together with Herd, they craft a sound that blends indie rock, chamber pop, and jazz. Their previous albums, “Orlando” and “II,” have been well-received, with the latter delving into the bittersweet experiences of adolescence.

“Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You)” stands out for its emotional intensity and lyrical sophistication. The band’s unique arrangement and heartfelt delivery give the song a distinctive edge, setting it apart from the typical pop landscape. The track’s blend of 80s country influences with modern sensibilities showcases Seafarers’ ability to innovate while paying tribute to musical traditions. With this single, Seafarers not only honor the legacy of classic country music but also present a fresh and compelling take on it. As they gear up for their upcoming album, “Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You)” serves as a powerful reminder of their ability to craft deeply resonant music that connects with listeners on both an emotional and nostalgic level.
