FiveSidedDice’s latest EP, Silly Songs for Clever Girls, bursts with energy and fun, showcasing a unique mix of genres and a distinct playful spirit. Released as the band’s first offering of 2024, this EP is a delightful dive into whimsical love songs that defy conventional norms. The project is spearheaded by Roscoe Nefdt, who handles everything from guitar and drums to vocals. Roscoe’s background in punk rock and alternative music shines through, influenced by bands like Weezer and Goldfinger. This influence is particularly evident in tracks like “Lil Miss Melancholy,” where Roscoe sings about loving someone with a melancholic demeanor. The song combines catchy hooks with heartfelt lyrics, showcasing Roscoe’s knack for blending emotional depth with a lighthearted tone.
Another standout track, “She’s a Computer,” takes a humorous approach. The song uses clever puns and sexual innuendos, drawing parallels between a love interest and a computer. It’s both cheeky and inventive, with dial-up tones cleverly incorporated at the end, adding a touch of retro charm. “The Crystal to My Meth” contrasts a punk rocker’s love for a hippy, highlighting their differences with a playful edge. Meanwhile, “Riddle Girl” is a ballad that delves into the complexities of being with someone who speaks in riddles and metaphors, offering a more introspective look at love.
The EP was recorded at FiveSidedRecords studio in Gqeberha, South Africa, and mixed and mastered in Northamptonshire, England. Despite some technical setbacks, including corrupted files that required a lengthy recovery process, the final product is a testament to the band’s resilience and creativity. “Silly Songs for Clever Girls” stands out for its inventive approach to love songs, blending punk rock, ska, and alternative rock with a sense of humor and playfulness. Roscoe Nefdt’s eclectic influences and dynamic production make this EP a refreshing and enjoyable listen. It’s a collection that promises to uplift and entertain, proving that love songs don’t always have to be serious to be impactful.
