Definition – Elysian Fields

Elysian Fields’ “Definition” feels like the kind of album that carries its own history inside the sound. It is not trying to reinvent anything. Instead, it leans into emotion, melody, and solid songwriting. That approach is exactly what gives it its lasting weight.

“A breath of fresh air from a band that understood emotion first, and trends second.”

Elysian Fields- Definition

Originally released in the mid-90s Utah music scene and now reintroduced to a wider audience, the album sits in that space where pop rock was still deeply focused on live musicianship and clear storytelling. You can hear that in every track. Nothing feels overproduced or forced. The songs are built around real instruments, real performances, and a strong sense of human connection. At the center of the band’s sound is the vocal presence of Kerri Murray. Her voice carries a natural lift, especially on tracks like “Staying With You” and “Take My Hand.” There is a softness in her delivery, but also a steady confidence. It pulls the songs forward without overpowering them. Around her, the guitars, keys, bass, and drums form a simple but effective structure. James Shumway and Mark Roos shape much of the songwriting, and you can tell the focus is on melody first. Songs like “Wings to Fly” and “Desert Sky” feel open and reflective. They carry a sense of space, almost like they were written with wide landscapes in mind. The production by Cliff Maag keeps everything clean and balanced, allowing each instrument to be heard without clutter.

What stands out most about “Definition” is its emotional honesty. These are not abstract ideas or overly complex themes. The songs talk about love, loss, hope, and the desire to move forward. That directness is what makes them easy to connect with, even decades later. There is also a quiet strength in how the band worked. They recorded an album before even playing a live show, which is unusual, but it gave the record a focused identity. You can hear that unity in the way each track feels part of the same world. Even though Elysian Fields had a short original run, this re-release brings the music back with clarity. It does not feel dated. Instead, it feels preserved. Like something that was always meant to be heard again when people were ready for it. “Definition” is not loud about its importance. It does not need to be. It simply holds together as a complete piece of work that values songwriting, performance, and feeling above everything else.
