Тигролови (Tiger Hunters) – Aircraft

For more than a decade, Aircraft has quietly built one of the more distinctive catalogs in independent European alternative music. Daniel Merkulov’s one-man project has continuously evolved from its early dream pop and shoegaze foundations into something broader, blending synth-driven textures, post-punk moods, and cinematic songwriting. With Тигролови (Tiger Hunters), Aircraft delivers perhaps its most culturally rooted and emotionally ambitious release yet. Rather than presenting six unrelated songs, Тигролови unfolds like a carefully constructed narrative. Every track contributes to a larger reflection on history, identity, resilience, and the emotional realities of modern Ukraine. Inspired by folklore, literature, and collective memory, the EP feels deeply personal while remaining open enough for listeners from anywhere in the world to connect with its themes.

Opening track “Люди” (People) immediately establishes the record’s thoughtful direction. Instead of offering simple optimism or despair, it examines the contradictions of humanity itself, reminding listeners that people possess the capacity to nurture and destroy in equal measure. The restrained instrumentation allows the weight of this message to settle naturally. The reflective mood continues with “Гаю Час” (Wasting Time), which wrestles with acceptance. Rather than encouraging passive surrender, the song suggests that peace often comes from recognizing the limits of our control. Its measured pace mirrors the quiet process of letting go. One of the EP’s warmest moments arrives through “Навколо Ніч” (Night All Around). Against an atmosphere of uncertainty, the song celebrates friendship and love as sources of comfort. Gentle melodies create a welcome emotional contrast while maintaining the record’s contemplative tone. The haunting “Зона” (Zone) turns toward the enduring cultural shadow of Chornobyl. Rather than recounting historical events, Aircraft explores how tragedy continues to shape imagination and identity across generations. The result is subtle, cinematic, and emotionally resonant. Nostalgia plays an important role in “Дивно” (Strange), which pays tribute to influential Ukrainian bands of the 1990s. Instead of simply recreating familiar sounds, Aircraft captures the emotional spirit of that era while giving it a modern interpretation that feels sincere rather than imitative.

Closing the EP is “Мавка” (Mavka), an expansive piece inspired by Ukrainian mythology. Its story of impossible love between a human and a forest spirit provides an evocative finale, blending folklore with universal emotions of longing and sacrifice. The song leaves the listener with a lingering sense of mystery that perfectly complements the record’s themes. Тигролови balances dreamy guitars, vintage drum machine rhythms, understated synthesizers, and Merkulov’s understated vocal delivery. There are echoes of classic dream pop, post-punk, and synthpop throughout, but Aircraft never sounds confined by any single influence. Instead, the production creates an atmosphere where every instrument serves the emotional narrative rather than overwhelming it. With Тигролови (Tiger Hunters), Aircraft offers more than an engaging collection of songs. It is a thoughtful exploration of memory, culture, and perseverance that invites listeners into a uniquely Ukrainian perspective while speaking to emotions that reach far beyond national borders. It is an EP that rewards careful listening, revealing new details and deeper meaning with every return.
