Jacob Klein moves between indie soul, lo-fi folk, dream pop, and alt hip-hop, and the production keeps those styles close without making the record feel predictable. There are warm, organic sounds alongside hazy textures, soft drums, layered vocals, piano, Mellotron strings, and little details that reward headphones. The album can feel intimate one minute and strangely dreamlike the next. That fits its story. The songs deal with grief, loss, memory, love, and the uncomfortable process of realizing that some things cannot be changed. The DOGSTAR idea adds another layer, with Sirius representing a lost dog and the record imagining a world where familiar people, places, and names feel slightly wrong. The opening track, “EVERY MOMENT SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL DIES,” sets that mood immediately. It sounds like someone trying to accept change while still holding onto what is disappearing. “pollen” is another strong moment. Its gentle feel and surreal imagery make it easy to understand why it works as a doorway into the album. There is something calming about it, even when the ideas underneath are heavier.
“BABY FELL IN LOVE WITH A STAR” is one of the tracks that sticks with me most. The title alone has this strange mix of romance and distance, and the song fits the album’s fascination with stars, memory, and things that feel just out of reach. “FANG (my world, a symphony, my heart, a comedy, a tragedy, my love)” also stands out because of how much emotion is packed into its title and presentation. It feels connected to the album’s bigger questions about love and loss without needing to spell everything out. Then there is “VOICES,” the album’s lead single, which feels central to the whole record. It helps bring the scattered pieces together while keeping the uneasy feeling that something has changed. Tracks such as “sara’s not a name for dogs,” “jambs (page 39),” “ASHES,” “Wolf Heart,” and “When I See The Moon” continue that odd, emotional story. The album doesn’t seem interested in giving you a simple beginning, middle, and ending. Instead, it moves through memories and feelings that overlap. “VOICES” can feel connected to “ASHES,” while “When I See The Moon” brings the night-time quality of the record into sharper focus. “better days” gives the album a more hopeful place to land. It does not erase the sadness that came before it. It simply suggests that accepting change might make room for something new.
I think DOGSTAR 1 will work best for people who like albums that leave some space for interpretation. If you enjoy artists who mix lo-fi intimacy with dreamier production, this is worth spending time with. It is also a good record for listeners who care about the story behind the music, because Klein’s experiences with his grandfather, lost friends, his dog, his relationship, and the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene all sit behind the album’s themes. Still, you do not need to know that background to feel the weight of these songs. The record works especially well late at night, on a quiet drive, with the windows down, or when you are sitting somewhere alone and letting your thoughts wander. It is not really a workout album or something I would put on for a loud party. Its strength comes from its quieter moments and its willingness to sit with complicated feelings. What I like most is that DOGSTAR 1 does not pretend grief has a clean solution. It accepts that memories can become strange, people can leave, places can change, and love can survive in unexpected forms. By the time “better days” arrives, the album has not forgotten any of that. It simply sounds more willing to keep going. That makes DOGSTAR 1 feel personal without becoming closed off, and unusual without losing its melodic side. There is plenty here to discover, but the record never feels like it is trying too hard to impress you.
