Adventures In Disappointment by Underachiever & The Letdowns is exactly as strange, messy, funny, and oddly charming as the title suggests. Coming out of Dublin, the band turns everyday problems into loud little stories about bad decisions, strange people, cheap food, drink, addiction, work, and emotional disasters. The sound feels rooted in scrappy indie rock, punk, garage rock, and whatever else fits the moment. The production has a rough, lived-in quality that suits the material. It does not feel overly polished, and that works in its favor. There is a sense that these songs were made by people who have spent too much time around retail, pubs, city streets, and questionable life choices. “Jacket” immediately sets the tone with its story of a stolen jacket and a woman running down Grafton Street. “Dana Zul” follows with another bizarre little scene, while “Angry Banger” sounds like it should be played at full volume when you have had enough of everyone. The album keeps moving through twelve tracks without taking itself too seriously. Even the song titles, from “Snackbox” and “Foncy Cheese” to “Scampi Pints” and “Mogolina,” make it clear that normal rules are not really welcome here.
A few tracks really stand out. “Angry Banger” is probably the easiest one to imagine getting a room full of people moving. The title says plenty, but the appeal is in the energy. It feels loud, direct, and built around the kind of hook that sticks in your head after the song ends. “Children Of The Night” takes the album into a darker place. The description of young musical sprites being stalked by something old and gruesome fits the band’s strange sense of humor, while the track adds a slightly unsettling edge to the record. Then there is “Scampi Pints,” which might be the most relatable song here for anyone who has ever gone for a few drinks after work and watched the evening become a much longer event. The album’s best quality is its willingness to make ordinary Dublin life feel ridiculous without pretending everything is fine. There is a story about a cat moving to Carlow, a person becoming pregnant with their own emotions, the dangers of eating too many snack boxes, drug addiction, isolation, and the mysterious Sydney Tony. These subjects sound random on paper, but they all fit the same world. It is a world where boredom, anxiety, alcohol, bad choices, and absurd comedy sit next to each other.
This is an album for people who enjoy their rock music a little rough around the edges and their lyrics completely unafraid of being weird. If you like bands that sound as though they would rather tell a bizarre story than write a safe, predictable song, Underachiever & The Letdowns are worth checking out. Adventures In Disappointment also works best when you are in the mood for something energetic and slightly unhinged. Put it on during a late-night drive through the city, at a house party where nobody is taking requests, or after a long day when you need music that understands how ridiculous life can become. It is not trying to give you neat answers. It is twelve songs about people messing things up, getting angry, eating too much, drinking too much, losing things, losing people, and carrying on anyway. The Dublin setting gives it plenty of personality, but the feelings behind the jokes are easy to recognize. “They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To,” “Can,” and “Sydney Tony” help keep the final stretch unpredictable, and that unpredictability is part of the fun. Adventures In Disappointment feels made for listeners who would rather hear something genuinely odd than another perfectly packaged rock record. It is rough, funny, anxious, occasionally dark, and very comfortable with being a mess.
