Music by Jeremy makes a striking first impression with Scenes from a Well Worn Path – Side One, a record that feels far more lived-in than most debut projects. Released as the first part of a four-sided, 24-song double album, this opening chapter introduces a songwriter with plenty to say and very little interest in keeping things predictable.
At the centre of Side One is “Be Me,” a driving indie-pop track that speaks to the exhaustion of constantly trying to fit into other people’s expectations. The song has an immediate quality that makes it easy to connect with, but its message gives it more weight. There is a real frustration underneath the melody. It is about the pressure to perform a version of yourself that makes everyone else comfortable, while quietly losing touch with who you actually are. That honesty runs throughout Scenes from a Well Worn Path. Jeremy moves between acoustic folk, soul, post-punk, synth-pop, blues and gospel without making the album feel scattered. The styles change, but the writing keeps everything connected. His lyrics look directly at subjects that many artists might avoid, including grief, moral failure, economics and even plastic-eating bacteria. There is intelligence in the writing, but it never feels like Jeremy is trying to prove how clever he is. His approach, which he describes as “joyous realism,” is especially interesting. These songs acknowledge that life can be difficult without turning every difficult moment into despair. There is humour, curiosity and even warmth sitting beside the heavier material.
Jeremy also brings an unusual creative process to the project. Working independently from his home studio, he plays the guitars and fretless bass himself and uses generative AI tools trained on his own voice to fill out the performances. Rather than becoming the point of the music, the technology serves the songwriting. The focus remains on the stories and emotions. With influences ranging from John Lennon and Bob Dylan to Randy Newman and David Bowie, Jeremy clearly understands the value of strong songwriting. Scenes from a Well Worn Path – Side One feels like the introduction of an artist who has spent years listening, thinking and observing before finally deciding to speak. It is thoughtful without being distant, emotional without becoming overly dramatic, and ambitious without losing its human touch. “Be Me” gives listeners an accessible entry point, but the real strength of the project is the promise of something much bigger. This is only Side One, and already Music by Jeremy sounds like an artist with a very clear voice.
