Metal Grew Up: Inside the Genre-Bending World of Dr. M’s Follow Me

Dr. M. calls this thing “Adult Metal,” and honestly, that name fits better than you’d think. It’s heavy guitars and thundering programmed drums sitting right next to smooth, radio-friendly melodies, like someone crossbred a Sunday morning coffee playlist with a Friday night mosh pit. Maria Moon is the reason it works. Her voice has real power behind it, but she never oversells it — she can go from a soft, almost breathy verse straight into a full-throated chorus without it feeling like whiplash. The mix is clean and polished, which makes sense given Svante Forsbäck handled the mastering. Everything sits where it should. Nothing feels buried or muddy, even when the guitars stack up thick.

A few tracks really jump out. “Blinded by Love” has the kind of chorus that sticks in your head after one pass — simple hook, big payoff, the kind of song you catch yourself humming at a red light. “Shanghai Night” has more atmosphere to it, moody and a little cinematic, and it’s a nice change of pace from the more straightforward rock cuts around it. Then there’s “The Climate Song (Before It’s Too Late),” which takes a real risk lyrically. It’s not subtle, but it doesn’t need to be — the urgency in Moon’s delivery sells the message better than the words alone could.

Taken as a whole, the album feels like it’s wrestling with big, grown-up stuff: love, purpose, the state of the world, what it means to actually live instead of just get by. Songs like “(Anyone Can Be A) Hero” and “Follow Me” itself lean into that idea of pushing forward even when things are messy. It’s not a concept album exactly, but there’s a thread of hope running through it that keeps it from feeling heavy-handed. This is a record for people who grew up on rock but don’t want to hear the same three chords they heard in high school. Good for a long night drive, good for folding laundry, good for anyone who wants their music to actually say something.
