Evil Jake’s Be My Ex-Girlfriend is the kind of rock album that knows exactly what it wants to do. It wants to be loud, catchy, funny, and a little reckless. The record mixes power pop, alternative rock, and classic guitar-driven rock without making things feel overly polished. The guitars have plenty of bite, while the melodies keep the songs easy to remember. Adam Lasus’ production gives the album a clean but lively sound, so the instruments still have some rough edges. That works well for a band built around guitars and strong hooks. The 13 songs cover a lot of relationship drama, frustration, loneliness, attraction, and plain old confusion. Tracks like “Use Me,” “She’s So Lonely,” and “Everything She Wants” quickly establish that this is not going to be a quiet record. There is plenty of energy here, but the band also knows when to slow things down and let the lyrics take over.
“Falling Man” is one of the biggest standouts for me. It has that sweet pop-rock quality that makes you want to turn the volume up, but there is still enough edge in the guitars to keep it from sounding too safe. The melody sticks around after the song ends, which is exactly what you want from a power pop track. “Be My Ex-Girlfriend” is another obvious highlight. The title alone gives the song a funny, slightly bitter attitude, and the music matches it with a strong rock pulse and a memorable chorus. There is something playful about the whole thing, even when the subject matter gets messy. I also like “Kiss or Kill,” which brings a more aggressive feel and gives the album another burst of attitude. Across songs such as “Say You Love Me,” “Serious,” and “I Don’t Think I Like U,” Evil Jake keeps playing with the push and pull of relationships. The lyrics often feel direct instead of carefully dressed up. That makes the songs easier to connect with. You get the sense that these characters are making bad decisions, wanting attention, getting jealous, falling for someone, and then wondering what happened.
As a full album, Be My Ex-Girlfriend feels like a collection of stories about complicated attraction and the ridiculous things people do when emotions get involved. “Saving Grace” adds another shade to the record, while “Delaware Park” and “Everything You’d Never Wanna Be” give the album more personality and variety. The closing track, “Smile,” leaves things on a lighter note and fits the record’s sense of fun. This is a good choice for anyone who likes melodic guitar rock, power pop, old-school alternative rock, or bands that put strong songwriting ahead of studio tricks. I can easily imagine playing it during a late-night drive with the windows down, at a small house party, or whenever you want something energetic after a bad breakup. Be My Ex-Girlfriend does not take itself too seriously, and that is part of its appeal. Evil Jake makes rock music that feels made to be played loud, sung along with, and enjoyed without overthinking it.
