“An intriguing blend of pop, rock, soul, with something reminiscent of Irish country and grunge… catchy riffs and powerful messages in their lyrics that go straight to the soul.”
Rome-based alt-rock veterans Mardi Gras delivered a sold-out performance at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone in 2025, showcasing their fourth studio album, Sandcastle. The live show was a masterclass in storytelling through music, as the band brought to life the album’s themes of bullying and narcissism set in 1980s New Jersey. Fans were treated to a mix of powerful riffs, emotive vocals, and stage presence that solidifies Mardi Gras as one of Italy’s most compelling independent acts.

Sandcastle, Mardi Gras’ fourth full-length album, continues the band’s tradition of blending pop, rock, and soul, with hints of Irish country and grunge. Their sound has evolved over nearly two decades, starting with their 2006 debut Drops Made. Known for their high-energy live shows, the band has toured extensively across Italy, Ireland, and Europe, sharing stages with Glen Hansard and the Frames, Billy Bragg, Mundy, Noah and the Whale, and Micah P. Hinson. Their music has even earned recognition from Neil Young, who featured two Mardi Gras songs in his Songs of the Times anti-war and protest series.
Over the years, Mardi Gras has recorded in iconic locations including Rome, Nashville, and Abbey Road Studios, releasing albums like Among the Streams and Playground, along with singles that charted on Italian charts. The band also contributed to charitable projects, including a benefit single for Parkinson’s Research and a collaboration with Irish troubadour Mark Geary. The Rome live performance demonstrated the enduring strength of Mardi Gras’ artistry, blending nostalgia with modern relevance and engaging fans both old and new.
