The genesis of the song and its accompanying video dates back to 2017 when Kelsie collaborated with the renowned Ukrainian composer and film director Sergiy Krutsenko. The resulting orchestral score, performed by the Kyiv Radio Symphony Orchestra, set the stage for a visually stunning and emotionally charged video. Shot at locations like a former Soviet prison and centuries-old castle, the video’s narrative unfolds in a dystopian society where music is banned, and musicians face execution for breaking the “law of silence.” The video’s storyline serves as both a metaphor for the actions of authoritarian regimes worldwide and a stark prediction of ongoing processes in countries like Russia, Afghanistan, and Iran. Kelsie, playing the role of a musical protagonist, stands up to a dictator, challenging the propaganda-driven army that constantly tries to silence her. Scenes of Kelsie in a straitjacket metaphorically capture the struggles of those who speak out against oppressive regimes.

The dedication of the video to Sergiy Krutsenko, who tragically passed away a year ago while editing the project, adds a poignant layer to its release. Kelsie’s commitment to continuing Sergiy’s vision by seeking a cable company to transform the video into a powerful series reflects the resilience of artistic expression against adversity. “We Are The Promise” not only serves as a war cry for Ukraine but also as a universal anthem against fascism and authoritarianism. As Kelsie aptly puts it, “All freedom-loving people must take individual and collective responsibility and oppose fascism in any form.” Released on January 8, 2024, the song carries a broader message about the importance of standing up for rights in the face of threats to freedom and democracy. The Kelsie Kimberlin Foundation is actively collecting donations to support Ukraine, rebuild the nation, and provide aid to war victims, emphasizing the artist’s commitment to using music for a greater good.
