37 Houses – Jealous Love (Live)

“37 Houses turn the complicated feelings of love into a thrilling rush of guitars, raw vocals, and the kind of live energy that makes every emotion feel impossible to ignore.”

There’s something unique about a band reworking a song in a live setting. The basic elements are all there, but the performance can be a completely different thing. “Jealous Love (Live)” by San Francisco indie-punk band 37 Houses is a case in point. It’s the same song as the one that appeared on their 2024 self-titled debut album, but the live version is much louder, much more intense and propelled by the sheer force of the band in the moment. It’s the lead single from their upcoming Live in Chicago EP, the recording of their July 2026 show at Reggie’s in Chicago.

37 Houses

“Jealous Love” is absolutely the kind of song that works brilliantly in a live setting as it’s so very much about the emotion at its core. Jealousy is rarely a straightforward emotion and it can stem from love, from fear, from insecurity or from the simple dread that a relationship is going to change in some way that we can’t control. 37 Houses have spent a lot of their career exploring those very real and often difficult emotional states and this performance is all about that. It doesn’t over-polish the song at all, it gives it a real pulse and a real sense of immediacy. You can absolutely feel the emotion of the song as it unfolds in front of you, which is what makes it so very personal in the context of a live rock gig full of noise and excitement. It’s classic indie/post-punk in spirit, with a raw energy that’s very appropriate to the subject matter. The excitement comes from the bright, punchy guitars and the vocals are very powerful indeed. The live version is even more potent than the original, making the song feel much bigger without in any way sacrificing its individuality. It’s a performance that really brings home why some songs are so much more powerful when they’re played live. The live recording has a certain looseness and life to it which can make the emotion feel more immediate than a studio version however carefully constructed. Emotional honesty has always been at the heart of 37 Houses. The band is very much the product of the relationship between lead singer Erin Sydney and guitarist Jeremy Rosenblum. It started as a way of processing the experience of going into lockdown just four months after they’d got married and has evolved into a sustained account of love, pain, uncertainty and personal evolution. Their 2026 sophomore album When and How It Happened is that story continued through a series of songs written over the course of 18 months as the couple navigated the realities of polyamory in their marriage. It’s a record of events as they occurred, not a record of what they thought would happen.

That background adds a real dimension to ‘Jealous Love (Live)’. The song is part of a wider body of work which is absolutely not going to present relationships in a simple, straightforward way. You’ve got ‘Helium’, ‘Shadow Puppets’ and ‘Unloveable’ on When and How It Happened all dealing with grief, regret, the difficulty of having difficult conversations and the sheer difficulty of holding on to love when things are going to the dogs. The album also sees Sydney writing songs for the band for the first time, so her own experiences and her own perspective are now more directly present in the music. All of that provides a real context for the band’s approach to the emotional stuff. The band’s recording approach is very much about the feeling rather than the perfection. When and How It Happened was recorded in a rented house in the Colorado mountains over just four days of live instrumentation. The vocals and the acoustic parts were recorded in Sydney and Rosenblum’s bedroom (again a very personal environment which is the source of the songs). That same desire for rawness and authenticity is very much in evidence on Live in Chicago where they capture the sheer force of a very good performance rather than attempting to recreate the studio version. Set for release on 20th November 2026, the eight track Live in Chicago EP is another glimpse into a band whose music is all about emotional honesty and raw rock energy. ‘Jealous Love (Live)’ is a great opener in that it’s a very exciting live indie punk song, but it’s the uncomfortable truths that make it work. For 37 Houses the stage is more than just a place to play loud. It’s another place where you can express the things that are really hard to put into words and this EP is a powerful demonstration of just how potent that can be when the amps are cranked up.
