The Generation – Don’t Know About You

“With bright guitar lines, catchy hooks, and the restless energy of the 1980s Washington, DC scene, The Generation prove that a great pop song can wait decades to find its moment.”

Some songs take years to find their way into the world, and The Generation’s “Don’t Know About You” is a perfect example. Released on August 23, 2026, the single brings a long-hidden piece of the band’s history to listeners in a fresh, remastered form. Its roots go back to Washington, DC’s legendary mid-1980s music scene, where The Generation developed a sound built around melodic punky pop, lively guitars, and hooks that stay with you. The band calls this style “Wowwerpop,” and it captures the playful, energetic spirit that runs through their music.

“Don’t Know About You” is driven by the kind of guitar sound that makes you want to move along from the first few moments. The melody is central to its appeal, giving the track an immediate sense of direction without making it feel overworked. There is a directness to this style of pop rock that can be easy to overlook, but The Generation understand how much impact a strong hook can have. The guitar-driven arrangement gives the song its forward motion, while its melodic character keeps the listening experience light, engaging, and easy to return to. Fans of power pop, jangle rock, indie rock, and alternative pop will find plenty to appreciate here. The song’s history makes its release even more interesting. The Generation were closely connected with fellow Washington, DC acts Modest Proposal and The Mondays, and their time together produced a collection of memorable songs. Yet the band burned brightly and briefly without releasing any records at the time. Their demo recordings were eventually left in a London storage unit for 33 years, from 1991 until they were rediscovered in 2024. Now, those recordings are finally reaching an audience, allowing listeners to hear music that might otherwise have remained forgotten.

For this release, the material has received a completely new sound mix and a remaster at Abbey Road Studios in London. John Barrett handled the mixing, while Geoff Pesche took care of the mastering. The result presents the band’s vintage songwriting with a more modern, driving sound suited to today’s listening environment. Rather than relying only on nostalgia, “Don’t Know About You” puts the focus on the qualities that made this music worth preserving in the first place: strong melodies, lively guitars, and a clear love for catchy pop songwriting. The recording features Tim Becker on drums, Neil Sherman on bass, and Davey X on sundry contributions, with Becker and Neal Augenstein serving as producers. Every title is composed by The Generation, keeping the spotlight on the band’s own songwriting. The single also forms part of a larger release story, alongside “When I Tell You” and the album Songs From Our Upbringing, which brings more of the band’s previously unreleased material into view. “Don’t Know About You” offers a welcome reminder that a song does not need to follow the latest trend to connect with listeners. Its guitar-led energy and memorable melody give it an appeal that feels natural rather than forced. For The Generation, this release is an opportunity to share music that has waited decades for its proper introduction. For listeners, it is a chance to discover a band whose songs still carry the spark of the scene that shaped them.
